Surprise, Surprise: PSP is #1 in Japan again

There is really nothing left to say. We're no longer shocked that the PSP is once again champion. Perhaps, even all of you are getting tired of hearing how great things are over in Japan. So, we'll just use this picture to convey how much the Japanese love the PSP.

Week of June 23-29:
  • PSP - 58,861 (490)
  • Nintendo DS - 48,884 (12,285)
  • Wii - 48,480 (7,443)
  • PlayStation 3 - 17,973 (2,363)
  • PlayStation 2 - 7,673 (1,327)
  • Xbox 360 - 5,104 (2,549)
The PSP still holds tight even with a strong boost to DS sales. The PS3 looks like it's slowly going back to its regular numbers, and the PS2 is still amazingly outselling the Xbox 360.

Crazy Taxi: Double Punch is crazy, out August in Japan

Does Crazy Taxi: Double Punch look familiar? It sure does. In fact, it looks just like Crazy Taxi: Fare Wars. Oh wait, it is Crazy Taxi: Fare Wars -- just with a different name for Japan. You know, to make the title feel like it's brand new and not some year-behind shelf-warmer. In any case, here's a zany Japanese trailer to keep you occupied. Crazy Taxi: Double Punch will be out in Japan this August 12.

PSP sells nearly 2 million in Japan so far for 2008

In Japan, PSP is king. Or, at least is has been so for the majority of this year thus far. Ever since Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G hit stores back in late March, the PSP has dominated the Japanese hardware charts. As a result, the PSP has gone off to sell 1,964,461 units for the first six months of 2008 in Japan alone. That makes the PSP, so far, the most successful system in Japan in terms of volume sales.

Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G has gone to sell 2.3 million units in little over three months. That's quite amazing to say the least. With such successes across the Pacific, we can't help but take notice and reflect upon the current condition of PSP in North America. Where are we going? Hopefully, E3 will provide us all with some answers.

Japanese Phantasy Star demo coming later this month

Phantasy Star Portable is a title that will be out in Japan at month's end. Gamers that want to try PSP out earlier than that can probably do so as it looks like a demo is on the way. Said to come two weeks earlier than the July 31 release date, a Japanese demo will allow players to tinker with the Story Mode and co-op ad hoc with Multi Mode. One last interesting bit involves the ability to transfer your character data from the demo to the full game, if you so choose to purchase the full game. There's still no word of a release outside Japan.

Worldwide PSP releases for the week of June 29

There's nothing this week for North Americans. Seems we're slipping back into the dark ages again. However, John Koller says a dark age is not on the verge. He says the titles are coming. Hear that people? The titles are coming. We're looking forward to a PSP renaissance.

NA Games:
  • No new releases
EU Games:
Asian Games:
Elsewhere in the world, since there are places other than North America, we're seeing a lot of stuff that isn't really "new" per se.

PSP is king yet again in Japan

Yes folks, PSP is again number one in Japan. After being knocked out of the top slot last week to second place by big brother PS3, the PSP climbs back to the top with 59,351 units sold. Despite a drop of 5,000 units from last week's 64K total, the PSP is still amazingly way ahead of its competition. Now, how did last week's top draw, PS3, do this week? It shot down to fourth place. It is, however, quite a success in that it's pulling 20K; usually the PS3 generates sales similar to PS2's current numbers.

PSP - 59,351

Wii - 41,037
Nintendo DS - 36,599
PlayStation 3 - 20,336
PlayStation 2 - 6,346
Xbox 360 - 2,555

'Porn pink' PSP used to sell PC eroge title

This is all a bit bizarre. Game retailer Toranoana in Akihabara, Tokyo's destination for things electronic, has a display set up within its shop with a "porn pink" PSP. It's got stickers and designs all for promotion of the PC eroge title Dokodemo suki shite itsudemo suki shite ("Love me wherever, Love me whenever").

With a name like that, it is a wonder why this title isn't on the PSP. You know, love wherever ... whenever ... sounds befitting. Anyway, this game isn't really for the PSP -- it's only on there for display purposes. We guess it's cheaper and space-saving to run a demo on a PSP than a PC.

Dissidia trailer shows us FF cameos in action

In addition to this morning's Dissidia: Final Fantasy website update, there's also a new trailer up on the good old internet. The trailer mashes up some old CG footage with some all new in-game looks at Squall, Firion, and Ultimecia. After that, there is even more CG with Tidus running around and a Squall-Sephiroth duel. Quality isn't that superb, but it sure beats seeing nothing at all.

Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth gets reprint, only $30

We don't really know why we're sharing this because we thought perhaps putting in our pre-order first and securing a copy for ourselves would be a wise choice before sharing the scoop. But, we've got an obligation to you dear readers and we wouldn't do that to you. If you haven't picked up a copy of Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth (a PSP port of the PSOne classic) then now would be a good time.

Online retailer GameQuest Direct has exclusively grabbed reprinted copies of the game and is selling them at 30 bucks. The games will ship June 27, so there's really no reason to hesitate. Go pre-order.

MTV finds PSP most popular on subway commutes

MTV Multiplayer editor Stephen Totilo ran a small year-long experiment to see which handheld system was more popular with NYC subway commuters. He recently posted about his latest findings and it showed that the PSP was the popular choice. PSP beat out the Nintendo DS (the only one with a fighting chance) by about 30 percent. It also beat out the GBA with a ratio of ten to one.

Here's a funny quote from Totilo: "Sony, if the whole world was the C Train, your handheld would destroy. (But given the quality of the C Train, I might have to find a new planet.)" Agreed, the C Train is pretty bad. We don't know where you're heading Stephen, but we recommend the 4 or 5. It's slightly better. Slightly. There's a pretty good number of PSPs there, too.

Sony talks about hurdles towards 10 year PSP plan

We've heard many times before about a ten year plan for the PSP and also quite recently from SCEA's John Koller. SCEE vice president of publisher and developer relations, Zeno Colaço, also recently discussed this long-term plan in an interview with Pocket Gamer, and talked about some of the hurdles (and boons) on the road ahead towards a decade-strong handheld.

Colaço started by painting a realistic picture about developing for the PSP, sharing insight into why perhaps some developers may be reluctant to sign-on. He stated that developing for the PSP is a lot like developing for a console: "... you can make games that look like PS2 games and developers are still approaching it from that point of view." This brings into question issues of financial costs and expected gameplay depth which ultimately mean longer production schedules.

In order to keep the system alive, "we need to revitalize the developer community to get behind PSP," said Colaço. To achieve this, there's going to be future development in hardware, services, business model, and support. Colaço points to network services such as digital distribution as well as PSP synergy with PS3 cross-functionality being instrumental in pushing things forward. "What's important is we continue to tell publishers and developers that there's an opportunity to make money on PSP," said Colaço. "That will become apparent over the next two years as the network services are developed."

Japan readies for God of War by throwing party

God of War: Chains of Olympus is on its way to Japan on July 10. To help get the game into the minds of PSP gamers -- and peel them away from Monster Hunter -- a special event was held last Friday in Tokyo. There were 15 booths where people could try out the game, tons of free swag such as keychains and t-shirts, and specially crafted drinks made from goat blood, harpy milk, and cyclops sweat were served. Japanese hip-hop group YOU THE ROCK★ was also around to keep things lively. See photos of the event here.

As Chains of Olympus devs Ready at Dawn have let their sun set on the PSP, this summer's release for Chains will be the final game on the system from the crew. In that respect, this event was not only the celebration for kicking off the PSP God of War game in Japan, but also, an unintentional farewell. We only hope the game does well in Japan because it really deserves the love.

Worldwide PSP releases for the week of June 22

This week has a healthy set of games. It's always nice to pencil in a game name or two instead of "no new releases," which, if you've been following this weekly post every Sunday, is something we got used to seeing. As the summer movies come in, so will their games; hence, why we have both Hellboy and Wall-E this week.

The Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Heroes 2 box art looks quite good. We're real suckers for flame designs and swirling energy.

PSP hardware finally trumped in Japan sales charts

Last week we posed the question: "Is the PSP finally knocked out of first place in Japanese charts?" It didn't happen that week; however, we must have jinxed the system because the unspeakable had finally happened this week. PSP has been stripped of its championship title. The hardware to take the top slot would be none other than the PS3.

1. PlayStation 3: 75,311
2. PlayStation Portable: 64,675
3. Nintendo Wii: 45,564
4. Nintendo DS: 39,201
5. PlayStation 2: 7,297
6. Xbox 360: 2,163

The PS3 has shot to the top because of the launch of Metal Gear Solid 4. We wonder if the PSP's dethronement will last long ... or will it be just a one-off thing? Given the PSP's proven track record with steady sales week after week for the past few months and the possibility that hype over MGS4 is calming down, we could see a PSP comeback next week. The PSP only trails behind the PS3 by 11,000 units this week -- that's not much of a gap to fill.

Pyroblazer set to blaze Wipeout Pulse on fire

Pyroblazer is set to give Wipeout Pulse a run for its money. Well maybe, only if there's a publisher willing to pick up the PSP version. Currently publisher-less, the title developed by Candella and Eipix is another futuristic hovercraft racer looking for some lovin' on our handheld system.

The game is set on a far off world called New Aperion where players control high-combat racing vehicles known as "Blazers." Gamers will have to race and fight against other vehicles for championship gold -- there's no explicit reason why ... but we just guess that's just what they do on that alien planet. Anyway, in addition to regular single-player modes, six-player ad hoc and online play are available. The official website has screens and trailers on the game, so check that out.
